Join us as Rita Dove, Miami alumna, Pulitzer Prize-winner, and the first Black Poet Laureate of the United States, speaks with the Miami community by video.
Rita Dove ‘73 is one of the most accomplished poets of our time. An American poet and essayist, Dove was the first African American United States Poet Laureate (1993–1995). In 1987, Rita Dove was the second African American to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Dove has received 29 honorary doctorates and has served as president of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, and as chancellor of Phi Beta Kappa.
She currently teaches at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville as the Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing. Dove has received many honors and awards and continues to write some of the most insightful political and personal poetry of the modern era.
Dove will reflect upon her time at Miami, talk with a panel of Miami faculty and students, and take questions from audience members.
